Window recovery is the process of bringing back detail in bright window areas while keeping the room itself bright, natural, and usable for a property listing.

Why windows are difficult

Interior rooms and outdoor window views often sit at very different brightness levels. If the camera exposes for the room, windows can turn white. If the camera exposes for the window, the interior can become too dark. This is one reason bracketed exposures are common in real estate photography.

What recovery should look like

Good recovery should make the image easier to read without making it feel fake. In many listings, the goal is not perfect outside detail in every window. The goal is a balanced image where the room is clear, the window area is controlled, and the final result still feels believable.

A natural recovery usually keeps the exterior slightly soft and bright enough to match the room. If the view becomes too dark, too sharp, or too saturated, the viewer notices the edit instead of the property.

Why fake-looking windows happen

Window replacements often look artificial when the inserted view is too dark, too sharp, too saturated, or cut in with hard mask edges. Thin frames, blinds, curtains, and reflections can make this even more obvious. A believable result usually needs soft blending, sensible brightness matching, and enough interior light to keep the room feeling natural.

A practical window recovery workflow

1. Capture a bracketed set with at least one darker exposure that holds window detail.
2. Build a natural HDR base before adding stronger enhancement.
3. Use a soft mask around glass areas instead of a hard pasted edge.
4. Match the recovered window brightness to the finished room so it does not feel disconnected.
5. Review the image at normal listing size, not only zoomed in.

When recovery is worth it

Window recovery is most useful when the exterior view adds context or value: a balcony, skyline, garden, water, or neighborhood view. If the outside area is distracting, a gentle highlight-controlled window may be the better editing choice.
